JAM DASS

Rockin' Your Bhakti

Jam Dass brings a unique jam rock perspective to the ancient chants and mantras of kirtan. Our debut album, Love, Jam, Remember, combines Sanskrit and English lyrics with traditional and modern instruments, and wraps it all in a heady rock vibe.

About Jam Dass

Jam Dass, a collection of yogis, bodyworkers, Reiki masters and teachers, mostly in the Northeast US, wanted to bring the quirky, upbeat, and slightly trippy improvisational vibe of jamband rock to the practice of singing sacred mantras and chants, in the same way MC Yogi brought hiphop and CC White brought the soul. We hope that our debut album, Love, Jam, Remember, brings a renewed and vibrant spirit to the chants and appeals to an audience beyond those already familiar with the practice.

We of course chose our name, Jam Dass, to honor and in gratitude to the great teacher Ram Dass. But it also means that we are, as it were, “servants of the jam” – we serve the music, mere conduits for the melodies of the Infinite – and we feel that music is the highest service we can offer to others. Or at least it’s the most fun!

About Love, Jam, Remember

Love, Jam, Remember is the first album from Vermont and New York-based kirtan jam band Jam Dass. The tracks are written by guitarist/vocalist Michael Levin,  and many of the songs on the album are influenced by his experiences and travels in India and throughout the world.  The songs range from tradtitional all-Sanskrit chants like the always-first “Ganesha,” (every’one’s favorite elephant-headed deity) and the hard-driving “Shivo Hum” (‘I am Shiva’) to English-Sanskrit hybrids like “Everything” (from a text Gandhi felt was the most sacred) and “In the Chit Sabha” (which tells the story of Shiva’s Dance of Bliss).

The album features an eclectic mix of traditional kirtan instruments, like harmonium and tanpura, and contemporary rock instruments like kit drums, keyboards, and electric guitars and bass. The band includes Melissa Rose on vocals, Jeff Hamilton on keyboards, David Walker on bass, Steve Fox on drums, and guest appearances by Jason Lynn on steel guitar, Eric Maring on tabla, and Yatziv Caspi on percussion. It was recorded and mixed by Zac Primrose of Primrose Productions in Pownal, VT and mastered by Steve Fox, Foxy Music, Boulder CO.

It took a long time to produce this album, through time and space, deaths, COVID, births, and all the craziness and changes life can provide. We’re delighted to finally be able to make this offering and do so with the deepest love, humility, and gratitude.
